ASEAN Endorses Trade Reforms to Counter Geopolitical Tensions and US Tariffs
Southeast Asian leaders have agreed on sweeping trade and economic reforms to bolster regional integration. The MOVE comes as a direct response to escalating geopolitical tensions and the recent imposition of steep US tariffs on ASEAN exports, which threaten the region’s export-driven economies.
The upgraded ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 roadmap were approved during a regional summit in Malaysia. The revised ATIGA, set to be formally signed in October, aims to lower trade barriers and modernize customs procedures—a measure the World Economic Forum has labeled a ’game changer’ for regional commerce.
